Some random photos taken as we drove down the west coast. These first ones are at Cape Disappointment on a foggy morning after a night of rain.
There was a big group of gulls and pelicans on the beach.
Of course, when we got closer they all took off and flew away.
There don't seem to be as many sand dollar shells on the beaches these days. They are a kind of flat sea urchin, with the same five way radial symmetry.
Much further down the coast, near Santa Barbara, we visited one of the places where monarchs overwinter (at Pismo Beach). It was a small grove of trees surrounded by roads and buildings. It was early for the monarchs to arrive but there were a few flying around. These are the western population. A few years, we visited where the eastern population overwinters in Mexico.
