Road Trip 2

Shelley happened to pull over to let some traffic pass just when I had spotted something white in a pond beside the road. It turned out to be a squadron of White Pelicans. I miss the pelicans from the river in Saskatoon so it was good to see them.

We stopped for lunch and a walk at the Missouri Headwaters State Park where the Jefferson, Madison and Gallatin rivers come together. A group of American Goldfinches were having a bath in the river. (three males and one female)

I think this is an Eastern Kingbird.

Eastern Kingbird ?

There were a few wildflowers along the trail - Larkspur and Beardtongue maybe.

Larkspur ?

Crested-tongue Beardtongue ?

As we were packing up to leave I saw something in the grass quite a distance away. I thought it might be a rabbit. Through the telephoto lens I could see it was a marmot. It was a little nervous but we gradually approached close enough to get some photos.

After three nights of camping it was time for a shower and a meal out. We stopped at our usual favorite Sacajewea historic hotel in Three Forks (near Bozeman). We figured out (from searching old posts from my blog) that it was 10 years since we first discovered this place. (We stopped for gas across the street and decided to check it out.) We've returned most years since then.

We stopped at the Bighorn visitor center where, of course, I found a few things to take photos of.

Blue Columbine ?

I only had my long lens when I spotted this spider so I had to borrow Shelley's phone. Phones these days do an amazingly good job. If you look close you can see it had another insect it was eating.

Jumping Spider

Another spider I spotted on the door of our van. (also a phone photo)

Running Crab Spider ?

And finally we made it to Five Springs, Wyoming where I like to camp and paraglide. There are only 20 camp sites and they are spread out over a large area. We had the place mostly to ourselves.
